Another night, another awards show! Back to back with Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards were the annual Emmy Awards—basically the Oscars of TV. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover, so have a browse below, and keep checking back for updates as more celebs are added!
Sofia Vergara
There was a long time there when I just couldn’t with Sofia Vergara. The eyebrows were so caterpillar-like, the faux tan too intense, the lipstick too frosty. As you can see, the brows haven’t changed… so maybe it’s ME who has changed. I think I’m ready to accept them, finally—and aren’t they better than witchy, skinny, arched brows would be?
Plus, now that she’s chosen a much better lipstick colour, everything’s changed. Has she even worn red lips before? They are so great on her, especially with the new lighter hair colour. Bold, in-your-face and sexy, and it works.
The lipstick she’s wearing is CoverGirl Outlast All Day Lipcolor in Ever Red-dy 507.
Kerry Washington
How great does Kerry look here?! There are a few things I’m loving; most of all it’s the hair. This Ombré is new, and I think it qualifies as “Sombré”—the new term for “soft Ombré.” It’s fantastic on her, and especially how it’s been styled in this straight but textured look.
Another area of interest are the eyelids. They’re navy! Her makeup artist, Carola Gonzalez, described them as “a dynamic blue eye” to match Kerry’s clutch and the bottom of her dress.
She’s wearing Dior Diorshow Fusion Mono Long-Wear Professional Mirror-Shine Eyeshadow in Cosmos (a shimmery navy) from lash line to crease and along the lower lash line, with Neutrogena Crease Proof Eye Shadow in Forever Platinum (silver) layered on top. She also lined the waterlines with Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Liner in Twilight Blue (deep teal) and applied four coats of Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara.
For Kerry’s foundation, Carola chose Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer Makeup in 11 and then used Neutrogena Healthy Skin Custom Glow Blush & Bronzer in Raisin Glow to define the cheeks. The nude lip is Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Warm Caramel.
January Jones
January got bangs! I think I love them on her (though admittedly I’m on a bang kick lately, so I want everyone to have them). She looks really cute here, and it’s definitely a departure from her prim and proper Betty Draper persona… without going as far as that messy multi-tonal braid and WTF eye makeup from a while back. I love the strong red lip and the ear jewellery as well.
Her lipstick shade is Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in 98 Coromandel.
Lucy Liu
Lucy Liu is pretty much ageless (she’s 45 now, if you can believe), and she pretty much always gets it right on the red carpet. This look is no exception. I’m so envious of her long, loose, just barely-waved hair. So perfect with the low-key makeup and even the lashes feel right here.
Natalie Dormer
Speaking of great hair, Natalie Dormer’s is another example. I’m confused, though. I thought she shaved half of it off? Is it really this bountiful and voluminous that you can’t even tell? Whatever her secret is, with all that hair, and her great skin, it makes sense the makeup was pretty natural, focusing on subtle smoky eyes.
She’s wearing Estée Lauder Double Wear Maximum Cover Camouflage Makeup in Creamy Vanilla, buffed in with a kabuki brush, and then a mix of Chanel Le Blush Crème de Chanel in 65 Affinité with NARS Illuminator in Copacabana for glowy cheeks. NARS Contour Blush in Olympia severed as contouring, and then the skin was set with CoverGirl Clean Pressed Powder Compact in Ivory.
For the eyes, makeup artist Jake Bailey lined the top with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion (matte black), and the bottom with the same liner in Smog (copper shimmer). Next, he swept Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Eye Shadow in Pose all over the lids, added Velour Are Those Real? mink lashes, and a coat of Urban Decay Perversion Mascara. The lip look is Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in Naked (nude pink) with a touch of L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Caresse Wet Shine Stain in Pink Perseverence on top.
Jessica Paré
Jessica has become one of my red carpet favourites lately—she really seems to nail the whole glam-yet-effortless thing. Of course it was Kate Lee, the queen of subtle enhancement, who did her makeup. We’re seeing more and more of this soft burgundy matchiness on lips and lids; Chloë Moretz was another recent example.
On the eyes, Kate used Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in 537 Quadrille and Chanel Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch Eyeshadow in 106 Hésitation. The lipstick is Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour in 17 Orchidée.
Alexandra Daddario
Love it all, except I don’t think she needed the lashes. Alexandra has such striking eyes and a gorgeous complexion, the bright red matte mouth was surely enough of a statement. I like the ease of her side-swept hairstyle, too.
Her makeup artist, Lottie, was going for “’40s movie star glamour.” She prepped the skin with Caudalie Beauty Elixir and Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet before applying Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation and Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour SPF 15. She used makeup artist favourite Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow as contour, with Tom Ford Cheek Color Blush in Frantic Pink on the cheeks.
For Alexandra’s eyes, Lottie chose the Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow palette in Rosy Tan 754, with Ardell Demi Wispies Lashes. Brows were enhanced with Tom Ford Brow Sculptor in Chestnut.
The hot red mouth is from Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil in Red 8C and Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge in 8 Iconic Red. And then a touch of Prtty Peaushun Skin Tight Body Lotion on the body.
Halle Berry
Let’s talk about how Halle Berry is 48 years old, and looks like this. Good Lord, the woman has great genes. She’s not one for red carpet risk-taking, so no surprises here—the only change is that she’s added a long, side-swept bang that almost covers one eye. I’m okay with it, I guess… but I think I’d rather see more of her beautiful face. Also, memo to Halle: maybe ease up on the lip liner?
She is wearing the Revlon ColorStay 16 Hour Eyeshadow Quad in Adventurous and Revlon Luxurious Color Eyeliner in Sueded Brown on her eyes. The nude lips were created with Revlon ColorBurst Lacquer Balm in Ingenue and Chanel Lèvres Scintillantes Glossimer in Sweet Beige.
Zooey Deschanel
Any time you see Zooey without her signature bangs… well, you don’t even know it’s Zooey. It looks like the bangs are still there—she’s just parted them in the middle—but even so, it makes a huge difference. Aside from that, this curly hairstyle is pretty cute, as is the makeup. It would be better if she didn’t have such a sharp line around the edge of her lips, though.
Makeup artist Jorjee Douglass used Charlotte Tilbury Charlotte’s Magic Cream to prep her skin, along with Charlotte Tilbury The Retoucher Conceal & Treat Stick to prime the lids. Next, she mixed Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow Skin Illuminator with foundation to create a luminous skin texture, and then mattified with Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Skin-Perfecting Micro-Powder. The blush is Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic Blusher in Love Is The Drug.
For the eyes, she used the copper colours from two Charlotte Tilbury Colour-Coded Eyeshadow Palettes, The Dolce Vita and The Golden Goddess. Jorjee also used Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon Colour-Morphing Eyeshadow Pencils in Champagne Diamonds and Dark Pearl. The finishing touch on the lips was Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lustre Luxe Colour-Lasting Lip Lacquer in Ibiza Nights.
Allison Williams
Allison Williams looks especially glowy here, and look closely—I think it’s because of the yellow gold around her blue eyes. I just love this new movement towards lighter, sparklier colours instead of all the heavy smoky techniques we used to see. I’m even okay with the false lashes here, since everything else is really clean (hair scraped back, great brows and nudey lips) and the lashes themselves are quite tasteful.
Makeup artist Pati Dubroff used Tarte Clean Slate Timeless Smoothing Primer (to eliminate the need for powder) and buffed in Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation SPF 15 in Light-Medium Honey, but only a thin layer so her freckles still showed through. She bronzed with Tarte Amazonian Clay Bronzer in Park Avenue Princess, and then made the cheeks pop with Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Fearless.
Brows were perfected with Tarte The Brow Architect in Medium-Tan, and then the lids got dusted with Ochre from the Pati Dubroff Dream Palette, all the way up to the brow bone. She added Tarte SmolderEYES Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner in Golden Beige at the centre of the lid, and Chanel Illusion d’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in 88 Abstraction on the top. For the gold at the inner corners of the eyes, she used NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Corcovado. Pati completed the eyes with Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner on the outer third of the upper lash line, and enhanced the lashes with Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara.
On her lips, Allison is wearing Tarte LipSurgence Matte Lip Tint in Lucky, with Tarte Amazonian Butter Lipstick in Golden Pink in the centre to add shine.
Christina Hendricks
You know I love Christina, but I’m not down with this new thing she’s doing with her hair. Where have the wigs with the bangs gone to?! I think they’re much more flattering on her than the styles she’s been wearing lately that expose so much forehead. Some people just NEED bangs. She’s one of them.
Christina’s go-to makeup artist, Vanessa Scali, did her usual gorgeous job on the makeup. On the skin, is wearing Pür Minerals Liquid Veil 4-in-1 Spray Foundation (coming soon!)and Pür Minerals Disappearing Act 4-in-1 Concealer, with Pür Minerals Balancing Act Oil Control Powder lightly on the T-zone. The blush is Pür Minerals Chateau Cheeks Cream Blush in Flirt, and Vanessa used Pür Minerals Afterglow Illuminating Powder to add a soft, luminous glow to the high planes of the face.
She filled in Christina’s brows with Pür Minerals 3-in-1 Universal Mineral Makeup Pencil, and then used the bronze shade in the Pür Minerals Perfect Fit Eyeshadow Trio in Jetsetter all over the lids and underneath the bottom lashes. She then defined the top lash line with Pür Minerals Mineral Eye Defining Pencil in Deep Graphite, the bottom with the same pencil in Polished Stone, and then finished off the eyes with a few coats of Pür Minerals Big Look Extreme Mascara.
For the lips, Vanessa applied Pür Minerals Chateau De Vine Lipstick in Starlet with her fingers to the centre of Christina’s lips, and then layered Pür Minerals Lip Gloss Stick in Dare Devil over top.
Kaley Cuoco
High five to Kaley—how much of an improvement is her new short haircut?! (Answer: a HUGE one.) It looks like she’s lightened things up on the makeup front as well. I’m very, very pleased!
Makeup artist Jamie Greenberg perfected her skin with Tom Ford Traceless Foundation, then applied Mark Touch & Glow All Over Shimmer Cream Cubes as blush and shadow. She also enhanced the eyes with Mark All Time Eye Hook Up Longwear Shadow in Thunder Cloud and the pink shade from the Avon True Color Eyeshadow Quad in Purple Pop. The liner is Mark No Place to Run Waterproof Eyeliner in Jet Set, and the mascara is new Avon Big & Daring Volume Mascara in Blackest Black. Jamie added Ardell Individual Lashes for extra drama.
The brows were defined with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Pro Series Brow Palette, and on the lips, Jamie dabbed Mark All Butter Now Lip Treat in Pop Tart with Mark Juice Gems High Shine Lip Gloss in Snow Peach on top.
Claire Danes
If I were Claire Danes, think I would make a rule for my wardrobe team that all dresses must work with hair down. I just don’t love the updos on her. The red lip is kinda nice, though—probably nicer if it were paired with a bouncy blonde blowout.
She is wearing Chanel Le Crayon Lèvres Precision Lip Definer in Rouge Profond, with Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Flamboyante and Rouge Allure Gloss Colour and Shine Lipgloss in Pirate over top. (The latter two shades are coming out this fall.)
Julia Roberts
Wow, Julia is looking amazing right now. I saw her on the cover of September InStyle and assumed it was a lot of re-touching, but she looks just as good here in real life! I love the colour, shape and texture of her hair, and the neutral makeup tones really work for her.
On her skin, she is wearing Lancôme Bienfait Teinté Beauty Balm and Lancôme Visionnaire 1-Minute Blur. The blush is Lancôme Blush Subtil Palette in Nectar Lace. Her eyes (and brows) were enhanced with Giorgio Armani Eye & Brow Maestro in 1, 2 and 5; Lancôme Color Design 5 Shadow & Liner Palette in Golden Frenzy and the new Lancôme Grandiôse Wide-Angle Fan Effect Mascara. Lip colour is Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge in Fleur Impressioniste.
Sarah Hyland
So Sarah is determined to make brown makeup happen. Fine, it’s not my favourite, but I think there’s a way to do it without being so heavy-handed. Does she really need to have smoky eyes, bold brows, a strong mouth and all the tawny contour under the cheeks? That said… I love her sky-high bun and the fuzzy texture around her hairline.
In case you do like this look, I’ve got some of the makeup details. Her makeup artist, Allan Avendaño, used MAC Pigment in Naked from the inner corners of the eyes toward the centre. At the outer corners, he applied MAC Eyeshadows in Swiss Chocolate, Smut and Bronze, and used MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle under the brow bones. The blush is MAC Powder Blush in Style. No word on the lipstick yet!
Kate Mara
You guys know I’m one for crisp, blunt ends of a haircut—so these wispy, razored bits at the bottom of Kate’s bob aren’t my thing. I’m happy she’s gone back to a darker colour, though, after that brief flirtation with blonde, as this is so much kinder to her skin tone.
Is she wearing bottom lip liner? Hope not. Otherwise, nice job on the makeup, especially the eyes. They’re a little bit sparkly and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll eyes. Her makeup artist, Maki Ryoke, used Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette in The Rock Chick—a brand new shade!
Michelle Dockery
This picture isn’t doing Michelle justice, because from a front-on angle, I actually think this is one of her best red carpet looks in memory. Her hair is parted down the centre and kept slightly voluminous but smooth, tucked into a low bun at the nape. (Much better than her attempt at edgy at the VMAs.) Filled-in brows, cat eyeliner and a neutral lip complete the look.
Hayden Panettiere
A bedazzled skinny hairband and trimmed eyebrow fans are exactly what I expect from Hayden. Not that this is terrible… it’s just not the most current of red carpet beauty get-ups.
The makeup details, for anyone interested, include Neutrogena Healthy Skin Primer and Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup in Buff. Her makeup artist, Amy Orseman, also used Neutrogena Healthy Skin Brightening Eye Perfector in Light down the bridge of her nose and under the eyes. For the eyes, she used Neutrogena Crease Proof Eye Shadow in Stay-Put Plum (on the lids), Forever Platinum (in the crease) and Stay Golden (under the brows). Amy also used Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Liner in Cosmic Black and two coats of Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara in Carbon Black.
Katherine Heigl
Wowza, we haven’t seen Katherine Heigl on a red carpet in YEARS. She’s looking okay. One thing she might consider is toning down that blonde—while I love a brown eyes-blonde hair contrast, this colour is VERY brassy. And it seems to bring the red out in her skin. I do like her makeup, and always find a dark eyeliner looks best against the same eye colour.
Taylor Schilling
Yikes! I know Taylor Schilling is having a moment right now, but gosh, I am NOT into that choice of eyeshadow colour. It’s so dark and rusty, it almost looks like a bruise. Everything else is okay here… but just okay. At least she’s not wearing cray false lashes!
Here’s the makeup intel. On her skin, Taylor is wearing Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 in Nude and Laura Mercier High Coverage Concealer for Under Eye, with Laura Mercier Bonne Mine Stick Face Colour in Pink Glow on the cheeks. Makeup artist Tina Turnbow mixed Laura Mercier Metallic Crème Eye Colour in Platinum with Laura Mercier Foundation Primer Radiance, and applied it to the high planes of the face as a highlight. To set, she used Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder.
Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Cocoa was used all over the eyelids, with Laura Mercier Sateen Eye Colour in Cognac layered on top for more colour and Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Moonlight to add sparkle. Tina also lined Taylor’s eyes with Laura Mercier Kohl Eye Pencil in Brown Copper and painted the lashes with Laura Mercier Faux Lash Mascara in Black. The brows were perfected with Laura Mercier Eyebrow Pencil in Soft Brunette and Laura Mercier Brow Definer in Warm.
On the lips, Tina dabbed Laura Mercier Rouge Nouveau Weightless Lip Colour in Sin with her fingers for a stained, bitten effect.
Julianna Margulies
Not sure about this headband on Julianna. While she looks amazing with her hair off her face, there’s something a bit casual about it—like it’s too similar to what I throw on to get my hair up when I wash my face before bed. Lovely makeup though!
Michelle Monaghan
What’s missing here? I can’t quite put my finger on it, because I love the waves in her hair, and the soft makeup with a hit of black tightlining in the waterlines. I think the problem is the brows—they’re too light. What say you?
Debra Messing
Hmmm, Debra looks quite good here—even though she’s got kind of a Botoxed expression, and I prefer more natural-looking brows/lashes. She really suits this vibrant red hair colour, and it looks great tossed over one shoulder, with the swoosh of volume at the front.
Julie Bowen
Still loving Julie’s new chop and its casual styling, although the colour looks super-yellow here. Also wish she’d lose the lashes and lip liner.. and face is looking a tad frozen.
Heidi Klum
Another celeb, another buttery-yellow hair colour. I think Heidi would look better with a dark blonde, but I suppose this has become her signature now. She’s still doing that darn thing with the white liner in her inner lower eyelids. Why, Heidi, why?? I swear, that makeup trick belongs back in the ’00s with under-the-brow highlighting.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus
It’s too bad Julia has such a pained expression here, because I thought she looked fantastic at this awards show. Hair, makeup, dress, everything. (Just as a reminder, look at the the Critics’ Choice Awards to see how far she’s come.) Love the flippy ends of her hair, the soft eyelid definition and flushed cheeks.
Melissa Rauch
‘Kay, I think I’ve finally reached my breaking point with Melissa Rauch. She is adorb, but I feel like I’ve seen these prom-looking updos with the rounded bangs countless times before. I want to know—does she ever wear her bangs flat? Might that be a bit more modern? Also, she could have loads more fun with her makeup (starting with losing those lashes). Great raw materials here, shame they are going to waste!
